Baby’s Skin Is Talking — Are You Listening?

By Pharmacist Hanini from Alpro Pharmacy Ampangan

As a pharmacist, I often meet parents who come in with a simple question:

“My baby’s skin is red. What should I put on it?”

It sounds like a straightforward question, but my first response is usually another question:

“Where is the redness, and what does the skin look like?”

Because when it comes to babies, not every skin concern is the same and not every cream is meant for the same purpose.

A baby’s skin is delicate and still developing. Nappy changes, moisture, friction, dryness and environmental factors can all affect it. So rather than reaching for just any moisturiser, I always encourage parents to first understand what their baby’s skin is trying to tell them.

🔴 “It’s red around the nappy area.”

If the redness is around the diaper area, moisture and friction can contribute to diaper rash.

This is where a diaper cream can play an important role. The goal isn't simply to moisturise the skin, but to help soothe irritation and provide a protective layer against moisture.

One option I often recommend is Pigeon Natural Botanical Baby Diaper Cream. It contains Ophiopogon Japonicus, Olive, Argan, Chamomile and Tangerine as its featured natural active ingredients. The total formula is 95% naturally derived.

It is clinically proven by paediatricians, dermatologically tested and suitable for newborns and sensitive skin. The product is also formulated without added fragrance, parabens and ethyl alcohol.

How to apply Diaper Cream:

This is where I would adjust how the product is used. If your baby already has diaper rash, I would recommend applying the Diaper Cream during every diaper change until the rash clears.

If there are no signs of rash yet, applying a thin layer during each diaper change can provide preventative care by creating a protective barrier against moisture and potential irritation.

I would also remind parents to change wet or soiled diapers regularly and keep the diaper area clean and dry.

🌵 “The skin feels dry, tight or sensitive.”

This is a different concern.

If your baby has very dry or sensitive skin, I would look for a cream specifically designed to soothe dryness and support the skin’s moisture barrier.

This is where I would consider Pigeon Natural Botanical Baby Dermasoothe Cream.

Its soft and airy texture is designed to absorb quickly without leaving a sticky feeling. It contains Ophiopogon Japonicus, Olive, Argan, Chamomile, Shea Butter and Betaine among its natural-origin ingredients. The total formula is 96% naturally derived.

It is also steroid-free, clinically proven by paediatricians, dermatologically tested and suitable for babies with sensitive skin. The formulation has no added fragrance, parabens or ethyl alcohol.

What if the skin is already dry or sensitive?

If I am recommending Dermasoothe Cream for an existing dry or sensitive area, I would advise parents to apply an appropriate amount gently onto the affected area, as and when required to ease dryness.

In short, the key difference is simple for parents:

Diaper Cream → for the diaper area and diaper-rash protection.

Dermasoothe Cream → for dry, sensitive skin.

🌿 Look Beyond “Baby Safe”

As a pharmacist, I also encourage parents to look beyond a product simply being labelled “for babies.”

Look at what the product is actually designed to do.

Is it meant to protect against moisture?
Is it designed to soothe dryness?
Does it support the skin barrier?
Has it been dermatologically tested?

For Pigeon Natural Botanical Baby, both creams contain 100% natural active ingredients, are clinically tested by paediatricians and dermatologically tested.

The Diaper Cream clinical study reported that 100% agreed it reduced redness and irritation in 3 hours, while the Dermasoothe study reported that 97% agreed that skin quality visibly improved in 3 hours. These findings were based on clinical studies involving baby volunteers with mild to moderate diaper rash or eczema skin, respectively, under paediatrician control.

Of course, every baby's skin is different. If the irritation is severe, persistent, spreading, oozing, painful or accompanied by other symptoms, don't simply keep changing creams. Immediately speak to your healthcare provider for proper assessment.

💚 Listen to What Their Little Skin Is Telling You

Babies may not be able to tell us that their skin feels dry, tight or irritated.

But sometimes, their skin does the talking for them.

As parents, our job isn't to panic at every little change. It's to notice, understand and choose the right care.

Because when it comes to delicate baby skin, sometimes the right cream makes all the difference.
