The Smile That Said, “Now I Know.”

As healthcare professionals, we meet so many customers every day.

But believe it or not, there are some smiles we never forget.

Because deep down, we know how different it feels when someone finally understands their health — not because we told them what to do, but because they discovered it for themselves.

One of them came from a customer who, when I first introduced her to continuous glucose monitoring (CGM), looked at me with a puzzled expression.

“Why do I need to know so many numbers?”

And honestly, I understood why she asked. She had been living with diabetes for some time. She knew the routine.

“Take your medication. Watch your sugar. Don’t eat too much. Try to exercise.”

She had heard it all before.

Then one day, she came to us with her blood test report. Her HbA1c was 7.5%.

Once again, the advice was familiar:

“Watch your diet. Control your sugar. Stay active.”
She knew what she was supposed to do.

But it was frustrating — because in her mind, she had already been trying to do all the right things.

So what was she still missing? Maybe she didn’t need more advice. Maybe she needed to see what was actually happening in her own body.
So eventually, she agreed to give CGM a try.

Over the next few days, she simply went about her usual routine — eating the foods she normally ate, while watching how her glucose responded.

And little by little, those numbers started to mean something.

Two weeks later, she came back to us.

Before I could even ask how she was doing, she smiled and said:

“Haha, now I know! I tried yee mee, mee hoon, yellow mee, kuey teow… now I know which one raises my glucose more!”

She was genuinely excited about it.

It sounds like such a small discovery.

But I’ll never forget the smile on her face. The numbers she once wondered why she needed, were no longer just numbers. They were connected to her meals, her choices and her everyday life.

Instead of simply being told to “control your diet,” she was beginning to understand how her everyday choices could make a difference to her glucose.

And soon, her questions changed too.

“What if I eat my vegetables first?”
“What if I have a smaller portion of the fruits?”
“What if I eat dinner earlier today?”

That curiosity was perhaps my favourite part.
Because taking care of our health isn’t always about getting everything right. Sometimes, it begins with understanding ourselves a little better.

And that’s why, even after meeting so many people, I still remember her smile.

The smile of someone who went from:
“Why do I need to know so many numbers?”
to…
“Haha! Now I know.”

Sometimes, reassurance can be as simple as that. 💙

Sometimes, understanding starts simply by seeing what you couldn’t see before.
