What Every Student Should Know During Haze Period

When haze hits, most of us notice it straight away. The sky looks hazy, the air feels different, and spending too much time outdoors can leave you feeling uncomfortable.

For students, however, it can be easy to ignore these changes and continue with the usual routine. Classes still need to be attended, assignments still need to be completed, and there is always somewhere to be.

But haze is more than just an unpleasant smell or a grey-looking sky. Polluted air can affect your health, especially when you are exposed to it for extended periods.

How Can Haze Affect Your Health?

Haze contains tiny particles and pollutants that can irritate your eyes, nose, throat and lungs when you breathe them in.

You may experience symptoms such as:

  • Coughing
  • Sore or irritated throat
  • Runny or blocked nose
  • Watery or irritated eyes
  • Headaches
  • Feeling more tired than usual
  • Breathing discomfort

For people who are more sensitive to air pollution, haze may also trigger or worsen existing respiratory symptoms.

So if you start feeling unwell during a haze episode, don't simply assume it's "just the haze" and ignore it.

What Can Students Do During Haze?

The simplest way to protect yourself is to reduce your exposure to polluted air.

Check the local air quality before heading outdoors and avoid unnecessary outdoor activities when air quality is poor.

If you need to go outside, a well-fitting respirator such as an N95, KN95 or KF94 can help reduce exposure to fine particles. Remember that fit matters too — gaps around the face can allow polluted air to enter.

You can also reduce prolonged outdoor activities and choose indoor spaces when haze levels are high.

Most importantly, listen to your body. If your symptoms persist, become worse or start affecting your daily activities, consider speaking to a healthcare professional.
