Daily vs Monthly Contact Lenses: Which Should You Choose?

The short answer: daily disposable contact lenses are worn once and thrown away, so there is no cleaning, solution or lens case. Monthly lenses are cleaned every night and replaced 30 days after you open them. Dailies cost more for each day you wear them; monthlies cost less if you wear lenses most days. Your optometrist helps you choose.

What each costs in a month

Costs for both eyes at Alpro OneClick prices on 6 November 2026 (several were on promotion; the product page shows today's price). Daily lenses cost a pair for each day you wear them. Monthly lenses cost one pair a month plus about one bottle of multipurpose solution (Alcon Opti-Free Express, RM20.97 a bottle in a pack of three).

Lens Worn 4 days a month Worn 12 days a month Worn 30 days a month
1-Day Acuvue Moist (daily) RM29.07 RM87.20 RM218.00
Alcon Dailies Total 1 (daily) RM38.64 RM115.92 RM289.80
Bausch + Lomb SofLens 59 (monthly) RM37.30 RM37.30 RM37.30
Alcon Air Optix plus HydraGlyde (monthly) RM77.63 RM77.63 RM77.63

In this example, Bausch + Lomb SofLens 59 with solution costs the same as 1-Day Acuvue Moist at about 5 days of wear a month. Wear lenses less often than that and dailies cost less; wear them more and monthlies cost less.

Choose daily lenses if

  • you wear lenses a few days a week, for sport, travel or special occasions;
  • your eyes are sensitive or you have allergies, since every day starts with a fresh, clean lens;
  • you would rather not clean lenses or carry solution and a case.

Choose monthly lenses if

  • you wear lenses most days of the week;
  • you are happy to clean and store them properly every night;
  • you want the lowest cost per day of wear.

Looking after monthly lenses

Wash and dry your hands first. Rub and rinse each lens with multipurpose solution, then store it in fresh solution in a clean case. Never top up old solution, and never use tap water or saliva. Replace the lens case regularly, and throw the lenses away 30 days after opening even if you have not worn them every day. Shop contact lens solutions.

What about coloured and toric lenses?

Coloured contact lenses come in daily and monthly versions too, with or without power, and need a valid prescription like any other lens. If your prescription has a cylinder (CYL) value you have astigmatism and need a toric lens; read toric contact lenses for astigmatism. Toric lenses are fitted and supplied at OptiSaver outlets.

Frequently asked questions

Can I switch from monthly to daily contact lenses?

Usually, yes, but ask your optometrist first. A different lens can need a different base curve or diameter, and your prescription names the lens you were fitted with.

Can I sleep in monthly contact lenses?

No, unless your optometrist has prescribed lenses approved for overnight wear. Sleeping in lenses raises the risk of eye infection.

Can I wear a daily disposable lens twice?

No. A daily lens is made for one day of wear. Throw it away when you take it out and start the next day with a fresh pair.

Online orders at Alpro OneClick are top-up purchases for customers with a valid prescription issued within the last 6 months. New to contact lenses or need a check-up? Book an eye examination at an OptiSaver outlet, or read the Alpro OptiSaver contact lens guide.
